Events are defined as trips or outings that are under a 24-hour time period or multi-day activities that are here on the island (ex. “Faith Alive Weekend”). We send out information about these events with postcards in the mail. To get on our mailing list, call Jonathan at (843)842-2696 or email him at jonathanhobbs@stlukeshhi.org.
Here is a list of events that we do each year...
Random Trips
We have now taken two random trips to the Friendly’s Restaurant in Beaufort. These trips will most likely continue. Friendly’s won’t always be our destination (though, if it was … that’d be totally okay with Jonathan). Other possibilities may include concerts, going to Starbucks, and cleaning Jonathan’s house. (Yes...We’re kidding about the cleaning … unless … you’re interested...then call Jonathan.)
Service Projects
This past year it was felt that we needed to start looking into more service projects. We’ve started that process by having a service project at the beginning of each Christmas Party. These type of projects will continue and become more regular as organization and participation grows.
Paintball Trips
There are definitely some students we want to shoot - and most of your children want to shoot us. We go to the Low Country Paintball in Ludowici, Georgia. We try to do this at least 2 times a year. The cost is $50. (BTW - we also invite any parents that want to shoot their children to come along with us!) (link to consent form)
Youth Sundays
This year (2008) was the first year that we have done TWO Youth Sundays. These are MAJOR productions and require a good bit of planning and practice. The band will have two (long) practices, and the whole group does a run-through the Saturday night before Youth Sunday. These Sundays have become something that the congregation really looks forward to. The way we see it, every other Sunday, the adults invite the teenagers to come and worship with the adults in an adult style. Youth Sunday is when the teenagers invite the adults to come worship with teenagers...as teenagers do. Usually, Martin Luther King Jr. weekend (in January) and Memorial Day Weekend (in May) are when we do Youth Sunday.
Not Just An Island
Last year we participated in a event called “Not Just An Island.” However, it was better known by the two elements that made it up - “The Invisible Children movie,” and the “Cardboard Village.” This year the organizers are considering doing it again but have not set dates or given out any details as of yet.
End of the Year Pool Party
We like to finish out the year with a pool party on the beach. We send out mailers a few weeks ahead of time tell people where and when (and what to bring).
Back-2-School Pool Party
We like to celebrate the end of summer in the same way we celebrate the beginning of it.
Planning Meetings
One or twice a year, we like to meet with the students to work ON SLSM programs. We debrief the year and review what worked and what didn’t. And then we come up with solutions for the following year.
Parent Meetings
We have two parent meetings a year: One at the beginning of each semester.
